If you sell your car,  you have to get the ownership of vehicle transferred in the name of the buyer. Vehicle ownership transfer which is generally called the “RC transfer” is important because it ensures that the vehicle and all legal liabilities related to it are transferred to the buyer. All it takes is an application to the concerned regional transport office (RTO).

How is the RC transfer done?

After selling your car, you have to apply for the RC transfer within 14 days of the sale of the vehicle. As mentioned earlier, you have to intimate the RTO and apply for the vehicle ownership transfer. There will be a set of documents that will come in handy for the entire transfer to happen. They are mentioned below:

Documents required to transfer vehicle ownership:

  • RC: The original registration certificate of the seller needs to be submitted to the RTO
  • Form 29 (Notice of transfer of ownership of a motor vehicle): Form 29 needs to be submitted along with passport size photograph of the seller and the buyer. The form should also be duly signed. Download RTO Form 29 here.
  • Form 30 (report of transfer of ownership of a motor vehicle): Form 30 needs to be submitted along with passport size photograph of the seller and the buyer. The form should be duly signed. Download RTO Form 30 here.
  • Form 28 (no objection certificate): It is required in case the vehicle has to be transferred to the RTO other than the one where the vehicle was registered. This form might not be required if the vehicle is being transferred from one city to another within a state. But, in some states like Maharashtra, it is mandatory.
  • Residential Proof: An address proof (voter card/ passport/ telephone/electricity bill/ Ration card) is mandatory. You have to also attach two self-attested copies of the address proof.
  • Report of N.C.R.B:  It is mandatory to get NCRB report if your vehicle was involved in any anti-social activity. You can get it from the nearest NCRB (National Crime Records Bureau) office
  • Insurance: You need to have a valid insurance certificate
  • PUC: You need to have the photocopy of a valid pollution certificate. You have to renew the PUC in every 12 months for the cars made after April 2010 but vehicles made before that have to renew the PUC every 3 months.
  • Transfer fee – Each RTO charges some fee for the transfer of the vehicle. It includes a fraction of the service charge and the transfer fee.

How much time does RC transfer take?

Some RTOs claim to transfer the RC in 7 days, but the usual turn around time for the RC transfer is 21 to 30 days and it varies from RTO to RTO.

How can you check your RC transfer status

Once you sell your car, it is important to find out if the RC has been transferred or not since legally you are still liable for the vehicle.
